Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Branden W — 03 Nov 2012
Polanski conjures up an occult tale of demonology and black magic in this bibliophile's tale of dusty books. The Ninth Gate is an acquired taste... an antiquarian taste for unearthly daemonic spell-casting and ancient first editions of magical lore.
Not Polanski's best film, however it is Polanski's most unique film nonetheless. This film stands alone as a dark subtle tip of the cap to the occult-- an obvious influence on many of Polanski's earlier films, Rosmary's Baby being the chef d'oeuvre.
