Review of The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (1974) by Christopher B — 04 Mar 2007
Is this the reason that Robert Crumb left for France?... I know if I had watched someone take one of my creations and completely rape it so it looks nothing like the thing it once was I would be upset.
The 9 lives of fritz the cat basically has Fritz at home and he is being yelled at by his wife and he (astrally projects?!) leaving that scene behing and ventures into other scenarios or "into his other lives".
. this is never explained in any way in the movie. The other lives include being an aide to Henry Kissinger, an astronaut and an orderly to hitler. Yeah they all sound like they could be interesting ( to say the least ) but nothing could be further from the truth.
I could be here forever trying to explain how bad it is but I would be putting more thought in this review than they did in this movie. The animation is repetative and bad (choppy at times).. the backgrounds look rushed and drug induced.
.. which I think is the point of this movie... to feel like some drug induced adventure but at least at a minimum you shouldn't show the same scene more than three times, which is what happens as you end up in the same room with Fritz nagging wife before he heads off to another flight.
Its only saving grace is the voice over work which has a casualness to it that has you feel like you are in the mid 70's. Avoid this movie at all costs.
