Review of The Night of the Iguana (1964) by Vera V — 29 Aug 2010
A classic black and white which saves its essential truths for the last half hour. I suggest you watch the first 10 minutes and the last half hour. The in-between minutes make sense out of the rest.
Burton is of course, excellent. Ava Gardner is the wild card, behaving so totally realistically/unrealistically as to scare you. Deborah Kerr is the sweet, good natured soul that keeps us all on track, as she saves Burton in the end. Sue Lyon, (where is she now?) is a knock out! A great performance of an underage teen trying to come on to Burton... of all things!
This is the thinking man's movie... not as they make em today. This is the antedote to today's film... no special effects whatsoever. Just raw human emotion. If you like Burton, you'll like this film.
Get it, watch it, stick with it. It will touch you.
