Inquietante ed angosciante, tra l'horror, il macabro, il fantastico; splendide regia e fotografia. Un grande Charles Laughton, che se avesse continuato con una carriera da regista, ci avrebbe forse regalato altri capolavori come questo.
Indimenticabili la fuga notturna lungo il fiume, il minaccioso canto del folle personaggio di Robert Mitchum, la grande Lillian Gish, star del cinema muto.
