Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Marcus W — 04 Mar 2010

I've always struggled with the majority of films made before 1970, as they have an innocence to them, possibly because so much was not allowed back in those days, and in films especially. Here, everything you've heard about Mitchum is true: it's a wonderfully evil performance, but the sequence where he's chasing them out of the basement is pure Home Alone and takes the edge off.

It's also predictable. It is a good film with some nice direction but it would be a lot better if they filmed it in colour, roped in Jim Carrey to play the Mitchum role, and had three orphans instead of two.

They could even call it A Series Of Unfortunate Events.
