Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by The M — 13 Mar 2010
There are some genious bits of cinematography and a great performance by Mitchum in this movie.
I can't really say it's scary because few older movies manage to, but there are some good suspenseful moments. There is also this brilliant scene between Gish and Mitchum when he is singing outside of her house and she begins singing a differant. It's just brilliant is one of my favorite scenes in the movie and from any movie. The whole movie has several really great haunting scenes and I wish Laughton would have made more movies then just this one.
Like I said Mitchum is great and his saintly counterpart Gish is as equally good in her role as the woman who is as good as much as Mitchum's is evil. Chapin and Bruce do a fine job as the kids, and the supporting cast members are great in their roles as well.
Fans of older movies and classic thrillers will certainly want to check this film out. It has some amazing scenes, good story, and great performances.
"Ah, little lad, you're staring at my fingers. Would you like me to tell you the little story of right-hand/left-hand? The story of good and evil?".
