Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Mark H — 09 Jan 2011
On first viewing, this movie gets 4 stars. I daresay it could get a higher rating for the overall movie with subsequent viewings. The movie is a gorgeously shot and framed black and white movie. It is quite dark for it's time, probably why it was ignored in 1955.
I thought John Harper was great as the boy, and Mitchum of course steals the show. The cinematography was my favorite part of the movie, though, with an underwater scene being the most beautiful yet haunting shot.
If you like old movies, black and white movies, Criterion movies, or forgotten jems, give this one a spin.
