Review of The Night Listener (2006) by Aaron B — 22 Sep 2010
NIGHT LISTENER There are certain movies Robin Williams has worn out his welcome in. I don't think I would cry if he never does another family comedy. However put him into a thriller like One Hour Photo, and I can be there.
So I went into Night Listener with a bit of hope that I was going to see a pretty good movie. After all, Toni Collette hasn't really disappointed either. She plays the mother of a young boy who was raped by a couple of bad men.
The boy (played by Keiran Culkin) is a fan of Robin Williams late night radio show, called of course "The Night Listener" so he begins to call the show. Eventually the three of them become friends and Robin Williams decides to visit them.
Telling you anymore than that will give away way to much, and while this isn't the most exciting movie I have seen this year, and I will be barely giving it a recommendation, I can see some of you enjoying it quite a bit.
It has a slow and deliberate pace, on the right day I may have enjoyed it more. It also tries and succeeds very well in having a distinct Hitchcokian feel. I hate tossing that overly used term out there, but it's very accurate in this case.
It's biggest flaw in my less than humble opinion, was it's predictability. That was enough to lower the films grade. On the plus side, Robin Williams gives a great quite performance. Toni Collette doesn't dissapoint either.
