Review of The New World (2005) by Zulhilmi Z — 14 Dec 2009
TOP 10 FAVORITES OF 2000-2009.
#10 THE NEW WORLD [2005].
Directed by Terrance Malick ["Thin Red Line", "The Tree of Life" (2010)] -- this movie at times feels like watching a poem real aloud and visualized on screen. Malick creates breathtaking moments which balance man in nature, making the landscapes on par with the characters in the story. Likely Collin Farrell's best role yet [as Captain John Smith] and one of Christian Bale's most measured ones, the quality of the acting runs deep with the most notable performance by Q'Orianka Kilcher who plays a stunning Pocahontas. Native American cast members learned Algonquin for the film which was shot all with natural lighting and handheld / steadycam cameras focusing on organic movements and unscripted moments. The scene of the lovers walking through the field together stands out as one of the most memorable love scenes I can think of.
