Review of The New World (2005) by Kellen V — 22 Jun 2010
Terrence Malick is certainly an interesting director, and always goes about things in a different way. That's a good thing for cinema. As far as the movie went though . . . I really wanted to like it.
There's aspects of this movie I do like, but not enough to overlook the bad. First off, I watched the Extended Cut (for what it's worth) and the movie drags. It's Pocahontas' story, I think maybe we should've stuck with her the bulk of the time.
There's only so many monologues we can hear are characters say in their mind. There's an interesting story in here, and when the music swells and you catch yourself looking at some great cinematography .
. . it feels like everything just might come together. But to quote Sick Boy, it's merely a blip on an otherwise downward trajectory.
