Review of The New World (2005) by Colin P — 19 Sep 2010
The way I see terrence malicks movies is that the scenery is as much of a character as the humans in a way. watching them is more calm reflection of what you see than a riveting plot. this movie is called the new world and is about that more than pocahontas or john smith, they are a part of it.
I really like this movie because it shows a lot of outdoor scenery in a pretty way. I like how it shows the indians and their way of life outdoors. malicks movies feel unique and not like most movies because I get of sense of the neutrality of the world throughout them, rather than contrived drama.
one of my favorite scenes is when it goes from the indians way of life outdoors into the europeans colony which is walled off and bleak. it is quite a culture statement about the society that overtook north america.
it also shows good white men like john smith who is relatable and strong and compassionate. it is one of my favorite roles from colin farrel. christian bale is one of my favorite actors and I didnt understand his character as well although he seems like another good white man.
pocahontas character is such a pure soul and very sweet and is one of the things that makes this movie so good. I feel like this movie is perfectly made in terms of it has a lot of beautiful imagery, human drama, and interesting things to think about, without pushing ideals or morals onto you.
many find this movie too slow but I do not, because its not about the plot but enjoying and thinking about what you are seeing. the plot is one that has been used many times, most recently in avatar, if you know someone whose only complaint about avatar is the plot is cliched, ask them what they think about this movie.
it is the same plot. I think the two movies are both great, avatar is just more fun and lighter and more colorful and fantastic, new world is more human drama and realistic. I mainly enjoy action movies and thrillers, this is one of the only slower paced dramas I can watch multiple times and really enjoy.
