Review of The New World (2005) by Joe F — 10 Oct 2011
I really hate this film's soundtrack. It's extremely distracting, awkward and doesn't fit the movie at all. It's like watching the start of 2001: A Space Odyssey but with Indians and the forest of Virginia.
The music becomes a little more bearable during the other half of the movie when they go to London. There the classical music feels more fitting. Other than that... this is a hard movie to have an opinion about.
On the other hand it's cinematography is breath-taking. The nature plays a strong role and everything feels almost too realistic. But on other hand the whole movie feels muffled. No one ever raises their voice, there isn't much dialogue and the story is told through whispered monologues or utter silence.
So at the same time I both hate and admire this movie. I gave it three stars, but I feel that it deserves four and at the same time even two would be too generous. Call it a compromise if you must. (Plus I would have liked to see a happy ending, and I almost got it, but then the movie had to go on for one extra minute.
.. Fuck you, movie!).
