Review of The New World (2005) by Cary R — 04 Feb 2012
Like other Malick films this, too, is a visual feast. The telling of the story is well-executed but the version I watched was even longer than the 2-1/2 hour theatrical release (Extended Cut at 2:52) and this is somewhat it's downfall.
Christian Bale's Mr. Rolfe doesn't make his first appearance until right at two hours in and that's when I first felt the editing could have been better achieved in establishing the John Smith-Pocahontas relationship.
Nonetheless, this a relatively minor quibble to an epic story that is beautifully shot and faithfully visualized.
