Review of The New World (2005) by Ryan P — 04 Nov 2012
As the huge fan I consider myself to be of Terrence Malick's work, It's hard for me not to love and appreciate much this movie has to offer, such as the arresting visuals and gorgeous cinematography, as well as oscar nomination worthy performances from Colin Farrel and Q'Orianka Kilcher.
However, the film suffers from Malick's intent to make an age old story seen in films such as Dances With Wolves (and oddly enough, Pocahontas) poetry. To me, it makes the film seem pretentious to a certain degree, as in it's trying to bite off way more then it can chew.
Still, if you're a fan of Malick's work and aren't a rather impacient person, then you'll be able to appreciate and find much to love in The New World.
