Review of The New Daughter (2009) by Kristin B — 01 Oct 2011
Newly divorced writer John (Kevin Costner) moves into a new home with his two kids. Sam settles quickly, but the older Louisa (Ivana Baquero) suffers wild mood swings and is soon returning home caked in mud and clutching a stick man having discovered an Indian burial mound.
It's not long before the family cat disappears, which doesn't bode well for the new nanny... The New Daughter is a generic horror/thriller right down to its non-descript title and packaging and makes every effort to tick off all the usual cliches.
Yet there's something undeniably charming about its resolute convention, and director Louiso Berdejo is smart to keep the horror largely off screen thereby creating a more tense atmosphere.
