Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Nicolette H — 16 Jun 2016
A very LOW 3. It pains me to not speak more highly of this film because it is truly one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The visuals were very entertaining to look at. Such breathtaking direction & cinematography.
The soundtrack was also amazing! Cliff Martinez did it again. I can't wait for the soundtrack to come out!! Those 2 reasons were what brought my rating up to a 3. The actors were all fine. Elle Fanning definitely shined.
She was gorgeous. But I can definitely understand why this movie was boo'ed at Cannes. Now I don't mind weird movies as long as I understand them. This was too weird for me. I found myself saying WTF? More times than I like in a movie.
I THINK I understood the message & what the Neon Demon was but for me it felt like the story didn't get as much attention as the look of the movie. I will also say a lot of it was very unsettling to watch.
Made my stomach turn. So I'm sad to say, I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped, so I personally do not recommend this as in I won't go around telling people to go see this. But if you do decide to see it, WARNING: Be prepared for abrupt light changes like very dark to bright white & strobe lighting.
Felt like I could have had a seizure it was so intense. Who knows (cause I have read people call it a masterpiece) maybe you'll find it to be a masterpiece.
