Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Jon C — 25 Jun 2016
A gorgeously filmed but haunting, nightmarish experience.
Really shows how the modeling industry is so cutthroat these days; so many aspiring girls come in to make it in the big leagues.
Agencies constantly tell them that they are not fat or ugly but at the same time give no other any reason to say so.
When it comes to true beauty is it really everything as far as a money-making profession or if everyone wasn't so perfect by changing their bodies, their diets and appearances would people take a second look?
Elle Fanning is very mature as the lead, she learns to make her way as a young adult by herself but sail through the social ladder.
Serviceable supporting roles by Keanu Reeves as a sleazy motel manager, Christina Hendricks, and Jena Malone as Jesse's only friend which at times is truly frightening.
Refn has an eye for the glamorous, sparkly world of fashion but also a knack for the bizarre imagery on screen.
The neon lights mixed with the techno score add to the spooky vibe of the world Jesse has entered.
This really says a lot about the competitiveness models suffer through whether it's new or existing potential.
It may not be as good as 'Drive' but the film succeeds at making the viewer look at beauty in a much darker light.
