Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Nell A — 18 Sep 2016
The only real "power" of this movie lies in photography and cinematography. Pretty pictures with trippy music. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas meets Vogue. Meets a shallow slasher with underdeveloped characters and boring concepts of femininity and beauty.
Let's just say if the pictures weren't so hypnotic and glamorous, this movie would be considered incredibly bad. Barely a plot - tiring, slow and insignificant dialogue, uninteresting characters.
The only highlight being Keanu Reeves, who unfortunately plays such an unlikable character you wouldn't even want to rewatch it for him. Horror for people who probably feel too good for horror, and are easily blinded by the neon into thinking this isn't a dull and predictable slasher like most of the others.
Pretentious artsy shots do not make up for characters that are an insult to even stereotypes.
