Review of The Natural (1984) by Nate W — 17 May 2009
It may drip of sentimentality and follow every sports movie cliche in the book, but damned if this isn't one entertaining film. Writers Roger Towne and Phil Dusenberry could have combated the predictability by enhancing the mystery of Roy Hobbs' past, but the end result is still an emotionally uplifting character-driven story, backed by several understated performances.
The golden production design and dramatic lighting paint an all-too-picturesque image of 1940's New York, and the now-famous climactic sequence is the stuff of legend.
