Review of The Natural (1984) by Daniel K — 11 Apr 2010
3: The first time I saw The Natural, it went in directions I had absolutely no notion it would, right up until the final scene. It defied my every expectation. It broke free of the genre's conventions in many respects, while faithfully upholding them in other areas.
The casting choices for the women were very interesting and each of the three characters was a bit hard to understand completely. There was so much of the film that remains unexplained to some extent.
Redford's character remains somewhat of a mystery. One can definitely believe that this is the guy meant to break every record in the book, but that he should be brought low in such a manner is terribly unexpected.
Not just a good baseball movie, but a good movie.
