Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Lumina — 28 Aug 2008
A decent attempt at a film adaptation of Eco's novel, although it definitely was not wholly faithful. I must say, though, the ending was more satisfactory in some aspects, no doubt to please the moviegoing crowd. Two things I loved about the movie: 1.) Sean Connery and the way he said "Adso." I can't picture anyone else but him in the role, although William's erudition was not as remarkable as in the novel. 2.) The set - an actual 12th century abbey - because it captured my vision from the book exactly and added new facets to my understanding.
In the end, just read the book. If you have the patience...
