Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Clifford B — 05 Jan 2009
Having just read Eco's novel upon which the movie was based dampens my opinion of it considerably, as much of the plot was changed and simplified, and all of the history of the heretical movements was taken out, replaced by F.
Murray Abraham as a cartoony, over the top villain. Christian Slater was likewise relatively uninteresting as Adso, and Sean Connery is the movie's only saving grace, giving his usual best. My recommendation is to read the book first, because while long and complex, in the end, it is much more satisfying.
The movie I'd recommend only for Connery and his wonderful accent.
