Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Steven G — 28 Feb 2010
Long before "The DaVinci Code", even long before "SE7EN", there's a movie that became my measurement on how a great religious themed investigative thriller should be made. "The Name of the Rose" is the movie.
The story, based on the book with the same title by Umberto Eco, is about murder mystery in a monastery in Italy. There are so many themes that developed well during the movie, I love especially the theme of power's corruptions. I don't remember if this movie or the book made such a worldwide hype like "The DaVinci Code", but one thing I know for sure. This is how I measure how good an adapted screenplay from a book that I had not read. If the movie makes me want to read the book to understand the story deeper, then the adapted screenplay (thus the movie) is GREAT.
