Review of The Naked Kiss (1964) by David K — 17 Feb 2009
A highly stylized piece of cinematic pulp from famed filmmaker Sam Fuller. Now, that's not to say that the movie is empty just because of its low budget nature. On the contrary, the movie really does make some critical statements on femininity and society as a whole.
"The Naked Kiss" explores taboos and what makes someone "bad," or "good" for that matter. I think on paper, this movie works really well. My biggest problem was the execution, particularly the acting.
It felt extremely unrealistic and "B-movie-ish." Normally, I can get past the acting if it's consistent and fits the story, but for me, it just didn't work that well. Nevertheless, "The Naked Kiss" looks outstanding.
It has some beautifully composed shots which really make the movie worth watching. Other than that, the film just didn't move me in any way. Unfortunately, the film just feels far too dated.
