Review of The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) by Ronnie S — 10 Aug 2010
I was trying to write an important-sounding essay-like review of this movie on the significance of slapstick humor and the lack of it in film today and why its popularity dwindled. I wanted to write something kind of semi-interesting, because otherwise hereâ??s how my review for this movie is going to sound â?? â??HOLY FUCK! The Naked Gun 2 1/2 is the funniest fuckinâ?? shit ever made! I couldnâ??t stop laughing my ass off through the whole movie! I almost pissed myself I laughed so much! Dude!â?? Itâ??s actually funny that I genuinely DID ENJOY this movie that much. I can remember when I reviewed it when it came out â?? I thought it was too bland and immature to be enjoyed by ANYONE of any age. I only gave it 2 ½ stars. I was TWELVE. I think I was just taking myself far too seriously back then, especially as a â??movie criticâ??.
Iâ??d like to a make a point using the old adage â??They donâ??t make â??em like they used toâ??. They donâ??t. I think slapstick is such a low form of humor these days because of its basis in violence. I guess weâ??re trying to make the world a better place for our children by making them boring robots. In my day (the â??80s) we had it made. The Police Academy movies, the Airplane movies, the Gods Must Be Crazy movies, The Naked Gun, etc. It was funny to see people get violently hurt in so many ridiculous ways, people caught up it absolutely absurd situations, that exceed the boundaries of common sense. Itâ??s a sense of humor that is funny because it plain and simply IS, thereâ??s no need to think too hard about it. Today itâ??s all about situational comedy, full of misunderstandings and social faux pas, where the main character ends up feeling embarrassed and you end up feeling embarrassed for them. Thatâ??s not at all that funny to me. Now, have them slip and fall down a flight of stairs and almost break their fucking neck and Iâ??d be laughing my ass off. Someone give Reese Witherspoon a black eye or something, anything, please!
The last subject Iâ??d like to touch on is how completely fucking awesome O.J. Simpson is. His comedic timing is impeccable, and his character is such a lovable, innocent doofus. I think everyone was cheering for him back then â?? the big, dumb football player getting a chance at being a Hollywood actor. Has a football player ever done this again? Brett Favre mightâ??ve appeared briefly in Thereâ??s Something About Mary and Peyton Manning hosted Saturday Night Live, but thatâ??s about it I think. Sure, O.J. murdered his wife and that dude. But did anyone ever stop to think that the bitch fucking deserved it? Did anyone listen to the stories about her being a nagging cunt who was always so messed up on cocaine and was completely emasculating him? She was calling him up on the phone to tell him shit like â??Ron has a bigger dick than you, loser!â?? or Ron saying â??Dude, Iâ??m fucking your wife, ha-ha!â?? I wouldâ??ve killed the shit out of them too! Just saying, give O.J. a break. His wife deserved it. The way I look at it, he did a good thing. They need to make The Naked Gun 44 & ¼ (Leslie Nielson is still alive you know) and put O.J. Simpson in it and give the poor guy a bigger role this time. I doubt it would be a box office disaster.
