Review of The Myth of the American Sleepover (2011) by James E — 03 Aug 2011
The Myth of The American Sleepover is an ensemble piece which chronicles the last night of freedom before summer ends and school starts back up. The film follows various teenagers, at different ages, across this night.
They don't all know each other but they occassionally cross paths throughout the night in their search for companionship, love or just an adventure. This is a very honest film that never feels cliche or overly cinematic.
All of the characters are very well written and are unique and honest portraits on teenagers dealing with various adolescent problems. First time writer/director David Robert Mitchell made a great decision in adding in a slightly older character who has returned from college for the summer, yet doesnt really know where he belongs.
This character alone really elevated the film for me from being broader in its dissection of adolesence and in the fact that an older individual was suffering from the same types of problems as everyone else.
The acting for the most part is very impressive especially considering the ages of these actors and it really does have some beautiful photography as well.
