Review of The Myth of the American Sleepover (2011) by David F — 29 May 2012
This independent film about a loosely connected group of midwestern teenagers enjoying the last hours of their summer, throwing disorganized parties, meeting up and escaping from each others company, captures rather too well the exact form and content of the lives of characters such as these in a place such as this.
There is an adherence to actual teenagersâ(TM) lives-the absence of adults, the extreme unrelenting awkwardness, the sheer aimlessness-which does not suit the making of a film particularly as it results in a somewhat tiresome and meandering movie.
I donâ(TM)t like to fault films or novels that have no plot, but this loosely organized ensemble film really needed something like a story, a main character, or a strong point of view to pull it all together.
At times it seemed to have something to say but so much of the film consists of very honestly and perhaps over-earnestly presented dialogue between teens that it fails to deliver a thought-out work of art.
Thereâ(TM)s too much about the teenage experience that goes unprocessed and kind of presented as it is in this film-the material ought to have received more shaping and direction.
