Review of The Myth of the American Sleepover (2011) by Tim M — 05 Dec 2017
I could feel myself forgetting 'The Myth of the American Sleepover' as I was watching it. David Robert Mitchell, who wrote and directed, does his best to impersonate a Richard Linklater film, but it just comes off campy and way too inauthentic.
While there are bright spots, unlike Linklater flicks where he takes so much pride in the characters, we are left guessing about who wants what and frankly my confusion often took me out of the movie.
Let's be clear, there are three sleepovers we have to distinguish and well more than a dozen people who Mitchell attempts to introduce. The third sleepover is out of place and forced. And while we have several actors making their feature film debut, many have no business being there.
For that, I give some of the blame to Mitchell who doesn't do the best job directing his young cast. There are moments of reality, then a song will break out that isn't funny or real and you feel like the movie has become a parody of itself.
Mostly a waste and a bore and way too safe. Final Score: 3.6/10.
