Review of The Music Man (1962) by Matthew M — 28 Feb 2008
Well, I enjoyed and hated this movie at the same time, which is quite the conundrum. Dont get me wrong, some of the songs are quite catchy and fun, but some of them just fall flat on their face and that doesnt bode well for a two and a half hour film.
Some of the song/dance numbers just lack imagination and arent as pleasureable to watch as other numbers in the film, or any other musical for that matter. When there is a lack of creativity amongst some of the numbers, the film just becomes dull.
Yet, to pry away from the negative there are some good spots, more specifically Ron Howard and the comic relief provided by the Mayor and his Wife, for they added some much needed charm to the film. Overall, I would say its not great, but its definitely not bad.
If you're a fan of musicals, I would say give it a try, but if not, I wouldnt recommend it.
