Review of The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) by Stuart K — 01 Jan 2009
Probabily the best movie that the Muppets ever made, and it was the last Muppets film made when Jim Henson was still alive, but like their first film, it is a fun affair with some good songs to it's name.
The film has Kermit the Frog and the rest of the Muppets graduating from college by putting on an old-fashioned variety show which goes down well. They want to put it on Broadway, but they have a hard time finding someone willing to put a show like this on.
They split apart when it becomes too hard, but they come back together through their friendship and put on a show. It's a shame the Muppets don't do more films, but their appeal is limited. However, when their creators put their minds to it, like in this case, they can make a good film.
It's got celebrity cameos from the likes of Dabney Coleman, Art Carney, Joan Rivers, Brooke Shields, Elliot Gould, John Landis and Liza Minnelli. Oh, and it has one sequence in it which gave birth to their animated cartoon Muppet Babies!! :D.
