Review of The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) by Rebecca H — 15 Aug 2009
As usual, this Muppet film sports some impressive puppetry and is funny (although there is a lack of the 4th wall jokes that usually populate and save Muppet films). For a change, despite a thin plot, this one actually just about passes scrutiny, and I think it is because the Muppets all already know each other so we don't have to sit through the tedious meeting each other scenes that have been dragged out every time so far.
Kermit and friends graduate and take their musical to Broadway to be made into a real show, but no one wants to produce it, so they all split up and get jobs while Kermit continues to try to get the show made. Even the songs are actually okay for once, although the musical that they wish to put on seems lame, and in the grand tradition of all films with a show in it, seems to be about five minutes long. However, there is basically no ending (did Miss Piggy just trick Kermit into marrying her?) and Kermit's endless feeling that the show is missing something is quickly papered over with a lame solution that makes no sense.
Oh well. Watchable.
