Review of The Muppet Movie (1979) by Yale B — 22 Mar 2009
Popped this in just to revisit my childhood. And I ended up sitting there with a big goofy grin plastered on my face as I reveled in the pure joy this movie produces. Jim Henson was a brilliant entertainer and nowhere was that more true than with The Muppets---a gang of felt characters who almost immediately ceased to be puppets and instead showcased unique, lovable personalities.
I love the pure insanity on display here--the pure joy with which they plow through every cheesy pun and joke, the subversiveness with which they break the fourth wall and the jokes that entertain both adults and children without having to make parents sweat.
But it's not just funny--30 years later this movie is still pure magic. The songs are some of the best written for a family film, there's a sincerity and heart beating through Kermit's quest to entertain that I believe mirrors Jim Henson's desire.
And the puppetry is still so amazing to watch that I found myself wondering how some sequences--kermit on a bike, for instance--were accomplished. Never make the mistake of thinking the Muppets were kid stuff--this is a delight for everyone.
