Review of The Muppet Movie (1979) by Subra S — 18 Apr 2011
A film-within-a-film account of how the Muppets made it to Hollywood. All the main Muppets are here. What's amazing in this movie is the mastery of puppetry in this film. There's not one scene where you'll go, "obviously this looks fake.
" I mean, they are puppets, but they are handled so well that it is easy to forget someone's controlling them and to just go with the illusion. For fans of the Muppets there are several notable firsts.
The setting of the film takes the Muppets out into the real world rather than their theater as well as shows some of them from the waist down for the first time. There's also many memorable songs with the most famous probably being "Rainbow Connection".
The story is more straight-forward than one would expect from the usual zaniness from the show. This doesn't mean there's no bizarre humor and I was taken aback at how much of it I didn't get as a child.
The numerous cameos from famous actors and comedians is a testament to the popularity and broad appeal of the Muppets.
