Review of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) by Paul V — 07 Apr 2012
Well... let's start with the bad. It's a shame not to have Rachel Wesiz back as Evy. It's pretty odd that Alex seems to have aged a good ten years more than Rick has since The Mummy Returns.
The film verbally references the past films a bit too often for its own good, in what I can assume to be an attempt to make the audience feel comfortable with the lack of Wesiz, Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr.
The story is straightforward enough, but relies, even more so than the first two, on big action set pieces over anything else to move forward. But, all that being said, I still think there's a solid enough action/adventure movie to be found here.
Having grown up a huge fan of Stephen Sommers' first two films, I will say, no, this is not as good as either of its predecessors, or even the first Scorpion King flick. But it's got enough well-done action, cool new series mythology and old-fashioned fun to merit checking out at least once.
