Review of The Mummy (2017) by Marcel A — 15 Jul 2017
Neither quite as terrible as you've been led to believe nor remotely memorable in any tangible way, this Tom Cruise turkey was earmarked as Universal's bid to launch a monster-themed cinematic universe akin to Marvel Comics', with future instalments to feature the likes of Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as the Wolfman; based on this incoherent mess of a movie, the studio's got its work cut out for itself.
You can't really blame Cruise here; the charismatic actor gets an 'A' for effort. In fact, I've long admired his willingness to challenge his matinee idol persona with leftfield film choices like 'Magnolia', 'Tropic Thunder' and `Rock of Ages', and now might be a good time for him to find that next leap of faith into uncharted territory.
[Next up, though? 'Mission Impossible 6', followed by second helpings of 'Edge of Tomorrow' and (gulp!) 'Top Gun'...so much for 'uncharted territory'.] In any case, this musty reboot of THE MUMMY will somehow make you long for the campy Brendan Fraser trilogy that precedes it.
..now, there`s a sentence I never thought I'd write.
