Review of The Mummy (2017) by Mark F — 22 Jul 2017
First of all, Annabelle Wallis is my new favourite. Wowsers. And with that out of the way, let's talk about the movie.
It gets off to a great start. It's intriguing, suspenseful, I liked the way the buddy thing was developing between Tom Cruise and the other guy. Then there's an amazing plane sequence and I was settling in for a great movie.
Unfortunately the movie dies around the middle. Pretty much as soon as Russell Crowe announces that he's Dr Jekyll. With the success of the Marvel Universe, I get why Universal would want one of their own, and reviving all these monsters for that 'Dark Universe' is a pretty good idea. But they seem to be in such a rush to start mixing that universe up that it wrecks the direction of this movie. Just tell us a Mummy story. Make it a good one. Make sure we like these characters and are invested in them. Save the 'Avengers' moment for another day.
After the weird and contrived deviation in the middle, it does get back to telling something like a Mummy story near the end. It's just that by then you've lost interest a little bit. The disappointment of it not being the romp you wanted it to be hangs over the rest of the movie.
It just feels like a missed opportunity in the end. I mean, it wasn't awful, but if they want this Dark Universe to take off and lead to a new land in their theme park, which I think they do, they're going to need to up their game for the next instalment.
Annabelle Wallis though. I mean seriously. Wow.
