Review of The Mummy (2017) by Mrssexly R — 14 Oct 2017
A gigantic waste of time, money, effort and talent, The Mummy reboots a film series from nearly 20 years ago and attempts to use it to propel a brand new cinematic universe, because God forbid anyone try to make a decent standalone movie! I've heard all about Tom Cruise using his creative control to essentially override production and give himself a lot more screen time.
This struck as profoundly ironic, since he spends the better part of it in 'Not give a toss' mode. It's impossible to tell whether or not the disinterest is something his character is supposed to exhibit or something that the actor as going through.
Either way, poor form Tom. The Brendan Fraser film wasn't a masterpiece by any definition, but it had a great pace, likable characters and was a tonne of fun, traits this unnecessary reboot is severely lacking.
For a movie about Egyptian mythology, not a single scene takes place there, unless you count the flashbacks, the cheap plot devices that are called upon whenever the story hits a dead end. The studio were obviously eager to kick off their Dark Universe, and as such The Mummy feels less like a complete product, and more like a stepping stone towards achieving that money-spinning goal.
It's a thoroughly uninteresting, nonsensical, emotionally lacking piece of franchise-feeding rubbish, and the sooner it's forgotten the better.
