Review of The Mummy (2017) by Sophia M — 12 Jun 2017
I'm going to break with consensus and at the same time uphold it. Let's start with the obvious: this is a bad movie. Holy underpants, this movie is bad. So bad, in fact, that with time I think it might be really watchable. There's comedy, although some of it is pretty forced, and maybe it's a sign that I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, but breaking with the typical "Disney villain" trope of the villain being an ugly woman, it was mold-breaking and kind of challenging on a deep, visceral level that the villain was more attractive (y'know, with skin...) than the romantic interest. They also added in some things that make the villain relatable, giving the audience a bit of internal struggle on that note as well.
Cruise tries to fill the shoes of Brendan Fraser, and tries valiantly. He fails, though, because a washed-up legionnaire with a back story is much more relatable than a war profiteer that we know nothing about, so there's not much he could have done. Still a valiant attempt, though.
In all, while this movie is, just, *so* bad... It wouldn't surprise me if it became a cult classic one day because if you've got a couple of hours, this will definitely kill them, and while there's no love for any of the characters, none of them are particularly easy to hate, so...
Meh.
