Review of The Mummy (2017) by Steve G — 10 Jun 2017
Having been a huge fan of Universal's Monsters since I was a child, I had very high hopes for this reboot series titled 'Dark Universe' which hopes to bring the likes of The Wolfman, Invisible Man and others into a shared universe; Universal's very own MCU and DCEU but with a more gothic approach.
My expectations were high and thankfully they were met!
I really enjoyed this interpretation of 'The Mummy' despite what you might read/hear from other media outlets; in fact, I had a total blast!
It's a fun romp and what's best is that it knows what it is and it never tries to be anything more - There have been more than enough critical evaluations of this film, needless critical evaluations however, I can somewhat understand some of the negatives that have been chucked its way and the one that seems to appear more often than not is that its too concerned with setting up a universe when it should be concentrating on the task at hand and that's trying to create a successful movie critically and commercially...My opinion on that particular 'negative' is that the more Frankenstein and Creature from the Black Lagoon references I get, the more happier I become. Convoluted? No, just tasters of what to expect later on.
Well, it's finally happening. The Monster's are getting their own Universe and after what I've seen with their first effort, I can tell you right now that there's plenty more entertainment to be had.
