Review of The Mummy (2017) by James D — 10 Oct 2017

Like many movies of this type, it just falls apart about mid-way through, after what I thought was a promising and somewhat innovative premise. SPOILER: That being Tom Cruise's character actually dying, then basically "resurrected", but cursed.

I loved the twist, and unlike other reviewers, I am a Tom Cruise fan, and was excited. I also thought the Sofia Boutella's evil Ahmanet was authentically creepy and well acted. Where I think they went wrong was centering around the love interest Annabelle Wallis' Jenny.

The character was firstly not well acted at all. And more glaringly was she became the all too typical White (in this case blond haired, blue-eyed) damsel that must be saved (or resurrected) at ALL costs.

The movie literally divulges of all other plot segments for this central theme, Tom Cruise repeatedly saving her over and over again. It became predicatable, laughable not in a good way, and tedious, with me wanting it to all end, when not long ago they had me.

So many movies divulge this way these days because the 'save the cat' formula proves to work, at least for revenue, moreso than not. However, innovative action stories that don't follow the standard also work, make money, and leave audiences cheering.

Can we have more of these please!
