Review of The Mummy (1959) by Joyce D — 17 Aug 2007
I always have trouble sympathising with archaeologists in Mummy films - they've got no business fucking about in people's tombs and they deserve everything they get, really. The best (ie, most interesting) thing about Mummy films is the back-story, often told in flashback - and Hammer's version is no exception.
Cushing & Lee naturally keep things watchable - Lee is a pretty fearsome Mummy, what with his 9ft-tall (or whatever it is) frame - and Cushing is, well, Cushing.
This version is memorable for the scene where Lee crashes through Cushing's french-windows and attacks him in his study.
Featuring the GREAT Michael Ripper as a poacher who likes a drink!
