Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Jordan S — 13 Dec 2011
Underrated by seemingly everyone, this is a genuinely and seriously creepy movie.
It is extremely well written, and filmed even better. So much of the films creepiness comes from its twitchy camera motions, its uneven angles and just flat out brilliant camera work and cinematography. Its score and background music do just as much to augment an already unnerving film.
The acting is good, although I wouldn't say Gere or Linney are at the top of their game. Patton is terrific in his role, as is Messing. The reason that this movie is scary is because of the complete and seemingly genuine terror which its actors portray. Messing in particular creates a sense of pure terror which saturates the film.
Fans of the 'Hostel' and 'Saw' style of horror need not apply. This is actually scary instead of just a disgusting and deplorable string of torture scenes. This film lets the viewers brain do the work, and that is always the most effective foundation of any horror movie.
Also making this movie creepy is the fact that this is pretty closely based on a true story.
