Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Reed L — 16 Aug 2017
An unfairly underrated paranormal mystery that mainly suffers from its source material, "The Mothman Prophecies" is, first of all, a complete work of fiction by author John Keel, with a small handful of unrelated factual events tossed into the mix to lend realism.
The movie itself is extremely well-made, with overall dark lighting, quirky visual and audio effects, ethereal soundtrack, and quite good performances from its principal and supporting actors. It's a "creepy" movie, rather than a formulaic horror farce with absurd boogie-men chasing absurd teenagers around a vacation cabin.
This movie was intended and designed to create an ongoing sense of inexplicable paranormal mystery, with no clear answers and no rational explanation of everything in the final minutes of the film. "The Mothman Prophecies" stands on its own and apart from the dreck that passes for "horror" today.
