This is the guilty pleasure to top them all. the acting is over the top, the female interest is useless, and the Russian madman stereotype is alive and well. But it's well put together, the suspense builds up concisely in the count's castle - and resolution is masterfully executed in the jungle.

I seem to remember the narrator taking over the count's activities at the end of the short story. He doesn't in the film version - after all, with Fay Wray at your arm, you can be sure your hunting days are safely tucked away.
