Review of The Mosquito Coast (1986) by Ben B — 07 Jun 2011
A fair film from the seemingly underrated Australian director Peter Weir based on the excellent book by Paul Theroux. Unfortunately the main character, Allie Fox so vividly brought to life in the book, has been significantly watered down for the Hollywood film.
The result is an uneven, albeit entertaining, romp in the jungle about a man tired and irritated by American capitalism who decides to uproot his family and start afresh in the Central American wilderness.
He wants to live off the land free of money and religion. Unfortunately his new way of life is soon challenged. Fine direction and performances (Ford was well cast) with great photography by John Seale and a wonderful score by Maurice Jarre.
Butterfly McQueen appears in a small role.
