Review of The Mortal Storm (1940) by Amanda M — 02 Nov 2008
I really enjoyed this film. The story was pretty simple and black and white - as if someone created this film right after the WW2...and to my surprise, this film was made in 1940...DURING WWW2. The timing and the fact that it was based on a book, which had to have been published earlier gave incredible foresight.
One will note that the Jewish ethnicity was never mentioned by name (they are just non-Arayans...which could include any number of the ethnicities persecuted by the Nazis) and the Yellow Star pin was never shown, but if you know any of this history, you can make educated guesses.
Aside from that, I'm just a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart and another big fan of Margaret Sullavan. Oddly enough, they starred together in another film, "The Store on the Corner" or the "Corner Store"...made this same year. This was a record year for Jim...per Wikipedia, he made 5 films this year, including "Philadelphia Story".
