Review of The Mortal Storm (1940) by Gene R — 28 Oct 2010
This is a very good film. It stars James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. The story is set just before WWII. A family in Germany is divided by politics and beliefs when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party go into power.
Plus life long friendships are put to a end when both sides do not agree with the new change. The story shows the struggles and persecution of Germans and immigrants who do not side with the Nazi party.
Solid performances from everyone in this. This film was quite bold for its time. The film was release a year before the USA even joined WWII. Adolf Hitler himself actually banned this film from showing in Germany plus any future MGM productions because of the message in this film.
The film did it's job in getting the message out about Germany at the time. The film stills stands up as a great feat for its time and gives a strong message about hatemongering and a dark part of human history.
Well worth a watch.
