Review of The Mortal Storm (1940) by Bob V — 15 Dec 2010
The full force of Borzage's melodramatic intensity is brought to bear in this, his indictment of early Nazi fanaticism. Did I say melodrama? Thriller is more like it, from the way the Roths are portrayed as a fully honored, well loved family to the gradual, insidious rise of Nazism to the sense of desperation the Roths feel in just trying to survive.
A hair-raising experience, and when you look at it in context of fanaticism today--in the Middle East, in American politics, in religions and politics everywhere--it becomes only more relevant.
