Review of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013) by Karen M — 24 May 2014
It got some things right, but most things terribly wrong. The three principle actors are good and Jace, Clary, and Simon are as good a love triangle as Edward, Bella, and Jake. I'm not sold on the secondary casting as Alex and Izzy don't resemble their characters in the novel, and as good an actor as JRD is, his look and interpretation of Valentine is completely wrong.
Next, the screenplay really could have been better. Too many things were changed, some of them direct violations of premises in the novels. How dis Clare allow that to happen? I don't see how they're going to fix that in future movies.
Most importantly, the director and his direction was awful. He could have pulled some life from the actors but you could tell he had absolutely no feel for the material. Get a better director and next time you'll get a better movie.
