The books are always way better than the movies hands down, but I have to say that I really enjoyed the movie. It has been a while since I read the book, so I am not sure if they left out any important details.
I was a bit worried when I saw the preview, but I have to say this is way better than Twilight and if I didn't have a child I would be seeing this a lot more then one time in the theatre. I am very annoyed by the critic's reviews because they have clearly never read the book.
This is one of those movies that if you haven't read the book you will not understand the story.
